Requirements:

~ align the author's last name or the title of a book (excluding "the", "a", etc.) with its corresponding letter in the alphabet

~ enter a different book for each author and title (total of 52 books)

~ complete the alphabet lists anyway that suits your fancy
(i.e.: complete each list separately in alphabetical order, read both "A" entries, then "B" entries, fit whatever you're reading into either list, etc.)

~ complete the challenge in the year 2008

~ enjoy the experience!

i might as well play along here while i'm doing the rest of my reading. right? :)

i'm not sure i really understand how the blog will work though. i'm sure it will be clearer after you start posting your reads ...

Joy said...

Alison ~ I understand your confusion. Mister Linky is having difficulties, so they are ALL missing!

Each individual category (letter for author and title) has its own Mister Linky and the Authors/Titles Alphabet on the sidebar were linked for easy access. Now Mister Linky just needs to cooperate and give them back to me!

Joy said...

Alison ~ OOPS! I'm sorry. Being that I was focused on venting about Mister Linky, I forgot to welcome you. :(

Welcome to the A ~ Z Reading Challenge! :) This should be relatively easy for many of us. It is just a matter of plugging them in! I believe I had to add 4 books for the entire 52 required. Not bad! I am not listing them though. I'm going to do it as I go along...just because I can! :)

Debi said...

Oh Joy, I may just have to stop coming by your place if you don't stop having so darn many good ideas! You know this was impossible to resist, don't you?

Juli said...

What the heck. I was doing my own personal A-Z AUTHOR Challenge so I'll throw in some titles and see how far I get. Hopefully with as many other challenges that I'm trying it won't be too hard.

Vickie said...

Your challenges are like catmint to a tabby.....cannot resist....

All Things Jennifer said...

Saw this idea floating around last year, can't wait to do it with everyone this year!

jar said...

Looking forward to starting this challenge. It should be fun.

Joy said...

Debi ~ I was worried that you were going to pass this one by. Silly me. What was I thinking???

Juli ~ If you're already doing some other challenges, then you'll be able to fill in many authors and titles. Hopefully the remaining won't be difficult. We'll help with suggestions. :)

Vickie ~ Love the analogy! :) Meow!

Jennifer ~ So glad you found us! I'm excited to start, too.

Jar ~ Some of us have done this before, so we KNOW it's fun! :) I'm not sure exactly why it's so much fun to fill in lists of authors and titles, but it is!

Kathrin said...

This might be a silly question, but can you also mix author's names and titles to complete the challenge?

Joy said...

Kathrin ~ I'm not sure if I understand the question, so I'll explain it this way: There are 2 lists, one list is filled with A~Z authors and another list is filled with A~Z titles. The two do not mix and each entry is a separate book, thus making the challenge equal to 52 books in the end. Does that make sense?

I hope you decide to join us. :)

Kathrin said...

I meant whether it's possible to do just one A-Z list and mix authors and titles. I think it could be quite difficult with letters like Q, X and Y...

Joy said...

Kathrin ~ The only real letter that has caused some angst is the "X" Title. I've seen some creative ways of handling it, but when I did it last year - I skipped it. This year I have a children's book to cover it. So don't worry. Just join in and we'll help you with other letters. :)

If you don't complete the challenge, you haven't lost anything . . . you've only gained more reading amongst like-minded challengers. We'd love to have you.

Lesa said...

Sounds like fun, Joy! I'll work on it during the year!

Joy said...

Lesa ~ Woo Hoo! What a nice surprise! Glad to have you with us, Lesa. :)

SuziQoregon said...

Joy - Help - I just posted the linky for my M author backwards - can you delete the one that's there so I can repost it?

Joy said...

Suzi ~ All fixed! :)

Joy said...

Phoebe ~ It's my pleasure and we're happy to have you join us! Happy Reading and Linking! :)

Kristina said...

Yeah Joy!! You have the best challenges! I tried to do this one on my own last year and it didn't work so I'm trying again!!

Joy said...

Kristina ~ Hopefully with all the support here, you will be able to complete it this year! Glad you're joining us.

Kim said...

Joy, thanks for the challenge. I messed up on my link #40. Could you delete that one for me. Thanks. I look forward to all the great books I'm going to read this year.

Joy said...

Kim ~ It's all fixed. :)

By doing this challenge, you'll be reading 52 books; I hope they are all great. :)

Lightheaded said...

Hi Joy! This one sounds really challenging! And fun! So I'm in!

Joy said...

Lightheaded ~ Great! Glad to have you. :)

Kim said...

Is it okay to include audiobooks? That was my plan and then when I mentioned it to a friend she wondered if it was cheating. What do you think?

Joy said...

Kim ~ ABSOLUTELY!!! I'm an avid fan of audio-books and would NEVER consider that "cheating". (I don't even like putting the two words together in the same sentence!) A book is a book, no matter how it gets into your brain. :)

I recently wrote a post about Reading Versus Listening. If you want, you can see it on my blog "Thoughts of Joy...".

gautami tripathy said...

I don't know if it is madness or not, but I am doing it!

Joy said...

Gautami Tripathy ~ If it is madness, there are a lot of us with you. :) Plugging in books we're reading shouldn't cause too much havoc. (At least that's the excuse we use.) Glad you joined!

Joy said...

Sally ~ I was confused by the message that I received when I went to your link, so I needed to delete it. If you still want to join, let me know here.

hikaruthedragon said...

I spent most of my free time over the last three days digging through my stacks of books (yes I used to work in a library and yes, I have enough books to qualify as "Stacks"!)
I finalized my lists today...I have all 52 books ready to go. I even have an X Author and a way to cheat for the X Title. I only had to go out and buy one book, which means 51 of them will no longer be collecting dust on my shelves.
This is going to be such fun!!

Quenby

Joy said...

Hikaruthedragon ~ Woo Hoo! Wasn't it fun!?! I love coming up with lists. This one, however, I am not posting due to leaving myself the flexibility of changing it whenever I want! :) I hope you enjoy every single book choice you have made, Quenby. Happy Reading!

Lezlie said...

I'm brand new to this blogging thing, and I wasn't going to make the leap until I had a better handle on things, but I couldn't resist!

Joy said...

Aella ~ Hope you enjoy it!

Medeia Senka ~ Oh good, then you should like this one. :)

Diana said...

Joy, I made a big mess under "Q" titles. Maybe you can fix it up. I ended up with 3 listings and 2 postings for the same review. Sorry about that!

Joy said...

Diana ~ No problem. All fixed! :)

Rhinoa said...

A quick question, if I read more than book by the same author can they be counted once for the title and once for the author? For example American Gods and Coraline by Neil Gaiman, once for A title (American Gods) and once for G author (Gaiman, Coraline). Does that make sense? As long as it is a different novel is it ok?

Joy said...

Rhinoa ~ Absolutely, yes! You may do that. :) Sorry for all the extra work.

Jenna said...

I've been in bed with the flu, so I've been reading like mad. I've got my first review up (Life of Pi by Yann Martel) and anticipate getting a few more up before the day is out.

Joy said...

Jenna ~ At least there was an "upside" to being sick. :)

QUARANTINEDFIRE said...

I am a bit confizzled as to how this works, but it sounds o exciting! ::runs off to read:: Hey hey, ho ho, off to reading of the books I go!

Joy said...

Quarantinedfire ~ LOL What is it that you need to know? I'll help you. :)

Rhinoa said...

OK I added some links below that do not overlap this time so they should be fine to stay hopefully. Having trouble thinking of authors beginning with Q at the moment, any ideas?

Joy said...

Rhinoa ~ YAY! :) Check out the links below the Mister Linky box where you signed up for the challenge to see some "Q" Authors. Also, keep watching to see what other people post. :)

Quixotic said...

Hello! I'd like to join in the fun! :)

Aria said...

Hi... I signed up for the challenge... It does look like a lot of fun and I figure it will make me try some new authors. It also gives me the reason I have been looking for to try some books I keep staring at in the bookstore...

Joy said...

Quixotic ~ Okey dokey! I signed you up and linked your blog. :) Hope you don't mind.

Aria ~ Yay! It does help in getting out of a rut and exploring new authors. I hope you have fun. :)

Sandra said...

Hi Joy, sorry to bother you. Can you change my url to this current one that I've used to post my comments? Thanks!

Joy-
Ha ha ha ha ha! Oops again! Ummm, yeah. So- that makes a lot more sense. My humblest apologies. I am re-entering the links for the books I already read. Sorry about the confusion and to cause you the extra work. I was very tired last night! Regarding your other note- yes, it was a snarky remark, meant only in fun. No offense was intended. Thanks again for doing this!

I am a little late in joining but this should be lots of fun! My first reading challenge since I joined the world of bloggers!

Joy said...

Jeanette ~ Welcome! Glad you chose this one as your first introduction! Have fun. :)

Deanna said...

This is one of my first reading challenges, so thanks for hosting...I did make a little error and accidentally added an incorrect link under the C Authors list...so please delete! Looking forward to completing this challenge.

Joy said...

Deanna ~ Welcome!!! I really enjoy this challenge and hope you do, too. Your "little error" is all fixed! :)

Shoshana ~ WOW! If you want to offer a $25 gift certificate - that's fine with me. I'm sure someone will be happy. :)

Maw Books said...

Joy - I've set up a new blog where I'm now keeping track of my challenges. This challenge can now be found at http://challenges.mawbooks.com/2008-challenges/a-z-challenge/

Thanks!

Joy said...

Maw Books ~ Do you want to sign up again with your new link?

Dominique said...

I joined the challenge! I hope I can complete it!! :D

Joy said...

Dominique ~ It's meant to be fun, so just do the best you can. :) And...welcome!

Jackie said...

So how exactly does this work? Do I enter my titles into the AZ as I do them or do I enter them once I have my list?

Joy said...

Jackie ~ After you read a book that fits your list for either a title or author, you link your review to the proper place. You may prepare a list or fit in books to make your list as you go along. You may use books that have a review starting from January 1, 2008.

Glad you are joining us! :)

Lynn said...

Can't believe how excited I am by this challenge :) Is it okay to list nonfiction as well as fiction?

Joy said...

Lynn ~ Absolutely!!! :)

Nicole said...

Joining late, but have read enough this year that I think I can complete the challenge.

Joy said...

Nicole ~ We're happy to have you! :)

Joy said...

Bambi ~ Your name did not link to your blog, so I deleted it. Please feel free to try again.

Jules said...

I'm slightly confused how to link the titles or authors from the blog to the list? Can someone help me out?

Joy said...

Hi Jules! Welcome! :)

After you write a review about the book on your blog, you click the time at the bottom of that post. That post will then be the only one that shows on your blog (along with comments, if there are any). After that you copy the address and paste it in the URL box of wherever you are linking.

If that doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll try again.

Jules said...

Thanks I figured it out. I'm actually going to use a different link for book reviews so my reviews don't clog up my blog. Instead of bookworm-jules , I'm going to use http://juliebooks.blogspot.com/. So could you delete my first link?

Also just to double check, we can use books we read back in Jan 2008 etc, as long as we link it to the review?

Joy said...

Jules ~ Yes, you can use books that have a review on your blog beginning with January 1, 2008. I will fix your sign-up links. :)

Sleepypete said...

I finally have a good use for my stories blog ! :-)

And hopefully an answer for one or two awkward letters like a Z author ;-)

Joy said...

Sleepypete ~ That's great! I'm glad everything is falling into place for you.
